It pays off in so many ways. Changing air filters, cleaning parts, scheduling tune-ups and standard inspections—taking these steps can significantly extend the service life of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and allow it to run more efficiently.
Purchasing HVAC equipment for your Georgia or South Carolina home is a significant investment. Heating and cooling expenses typically account for almost half your monthly utility bill. It is the price we pay for comfort.
Properly maintaining that equipment is the best way to enjoy a return on your investment. It also helps minimize the chances of inconvenient and costly repairs. At Old Coast Heating & Air Conditioning, we can create a maintenance program specifically tailored for your home and lifestyle.
Our family-owned business has been serving homes in Savannah, Hilton Head, and the surrounding areas since 2012. We care about your comfort and your well-being. Listed below are some steps you can take on your own, and others you should leave to the pros.
Change Your Air Filters
When was the last time you replaced the air filters on your furnace, heat pump, air conditioner, or humidifier? Changing your air filters every one to three months helps your HVAC equipment run more efficiently and improves your indoor air quality.
If you have pets in your home, or someone with allergies, you may want to change them more often. Follow your system’s manufacturer guidelines on which filters to use and how often they should be changed. This small step can go a long way toward lowering your utility bills.
Clean Around Your Air Conditioner or Heat Pump
When the weather warms up, use a water hose to gently spray off the outdoor unit of your air conditioner or heat pump. Doing so will remove any dirt or grime clogging up the condenser. Trim back any vegetation growing around your outdoor equipment. Ideally, your unit should have about two feet of clearance.
Install Programmable Thermostats
A smart thermostat allows you to control the times when your heating and cooling system operates. It reduces the wear and tear on your HVAC equipment and can significantly lower your monthly utility bills.
If you are not comfortable swapping out thermostats, our team of knowledgeable professionals at Old Coast can assist you. When everyone is at work, or asleep, a programmable thermostat gives your system a break. You can remotely adjust your thermostat via your smartphone if you want to adjust the temperature on your way home from work or while on vacation.
Insulate Your Savannah or Hilton Head Home
Use caulk or a similar substance to seal any gaps around your doors and windows. These small drafts can tax your HVAC system, forcing it to work harder to get the job done. The result is higher utility bills.
Sealing up these gaps is a small step that can pay off big dividends. You keep comfortable, your equipment operates more efficiently, and your money stays in your pocket where it belongs.
Let Our Professionals Handle These Jobs
Scheduling annual inspections with Old Coast Heating & Air Conditioning allows one of our NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certified experts to thoroughly clean and service your HVAC equipment.
We strongly encourage an annual tune-up of your air conditioner in the spring and furnace in the fall. If you use a heat pump, we suggest a biannual tune-up, once in the spring and once in the fall, since it handles both heating and cooling.
Unless you have the experience and expertise to work around electricity or natural gas, leave these types of jobs to one of our professionals. Safety always comes first.
Our company offers 24/7 emergency repair services for your convenience. We also offer Performance Club preventative maintenance plans that are tailored to your budget and lifestyle.
Signing up for one of these plans offsets the cost of repairs and service calls. They provide you with peace of mind knowing your HVAC equipment is being well-maintained throughout the year.

“I just had a semi annual service preformed to make sure I do not run any problems this summer. Caleb and Thomas were very professional and did a great job explaining what can be done to improve my system. They thoroughly cleaned the indoor and outdoor units and checked gas pressures etc. Also showed me pictures of the interior of the systems to verify their work and point out potential future upgrades. Happily renewing my annual service contract.”
“Caleb was great. Quick, efficient and very friendly. He even cleaned around the upstairs unit where service people before left some trash! Hope he comes next time for sure! Thanks Caleb!”
Thank you for the review, Cynthia! We’re glad that Caleb and the team were able to help out!
“Adam was efficient, professional and informative.”
Thank you for your review Philip. We’re glad Adam and the team could help!
“Adam Pittser performed a Service Analysis on our two HVAC Units in mid-March. He informed my wife and I that he had found that there was "mold" in both Units. He installed a REME*HALO Air Purification System in the Lennox Unit. He recommended that our Mitsubishi Unit be replaced because of It's age and the having a rusting condenser. Roy Moore came out and my wife and I decided to have a Mitsubishi ML Series 12,000 BTU Heat Pump System with Platinum Air Purifier installed. Thanks to Mr. Pittser, my wife no longer have to worry about breathing "moldy air"!”
Glad Adam could help you out. Thank you for the kind words and enjoy breathing in that fresh and clean air!
“4/10/20 Adam was out to do my seasonal maintenance. He was very knowledgeable and courteous. He checked on things which I mentioned to him and suggested processes and parts that would be beneficial to have done for my AC unit so that it would work properly throughout this summer. He showed me the replaced part and made sure that I knew it was my choice to do certain replacements and processes suggested. No pressure, no sales pitch. It's refreshing to have a service person who is honest and knowledgable, and I don't have to spend time worrying if they are doing everything correctly. Thank you Adam!”
We’re glad that Adam was able to help you out Linda. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review!
“My service Tech did a great job on the preventative maintenance call leaving my two units clean and running great. He installed a Reme Halo air purification system in my ductwork that will improve my air quality and prevent mold, bacteria, and viruses.
The unit runs great and I am looking forward to a reduction in my heating and cooling bill now that the service work has been completed.”

Thank you Charles. Glad Chris and the team could help.
“I am giving 5 starts to the technician Thomas Honeycutt. He was right on time and finished exactly when he said he would with the routine maintenance. Thomas was very respectful and completely professional. I would recommend him every time.”

“Thomas was great. He came over to do a diagnostic and he was up front with everything he found. Which was not great news but that wasn’t his fault. He took pictures and explained what I was looking at. He was great. When we got told the situation I asked to get quotes for a new unit and there was zero pressure by Robert which was great even though he knew the situation. Old Coast is the only place for me.”

Thanks Dori! Sorry to hear about your situation but we are here to help any way we can. Thanks so much for your business.
