HVAC Filters: What You Need To Know

HVAC filters are key components to your Savannah, GA, or Hilton Head, SC, home’s HVAC system. HVAC filters play an important role in the efficiency of your system and the overall health of your home. It’s important that you know what your HVAC filters do, when they need to be replaced, and what the differences are among the ratings.

What HVAC Filters Do

Although many people believe the air filter is there to clean the indoor air, the primary job of the filter is actually to protect your HVAC equipment. When your HVAC filter isn’t in good condition, or you don’t change it regularly, your HVAC system may sustain damage from dust other particles drawn into the system.

How Often Should Your HVAC Filter be Replaced?

How often you need to change your filter depends on a variety of factors. Every three to four weeks is a good rule if you live in a polluted area, have bad allergies, or have multiple pets.
However, if you rarely use your HVAC system, you may be able to wait up to three or six months before changing the filter. Be sure to change it out every spring and fall.
With all these variables, the only way to be sure you’re changing your filter at the right time for your home is to check it regularly. Hold it up to the light, and if you can’t see through the filter, it’s time for a change.

Get the Right MERV Rating

Not all HVAC filters will clean your air with the same level of efficiency. Higher-quality filters remove more contaminants from the air. All filters have a Minimum Efficient Reporting Value (MERV) rating. The higher the MERV rating, the better the filtration. But a very high MERV rating is not always desired, as it can slow airflow across the heat exchanger. This can reduce your HVAC’s efficiency, increase your energy bills, cause your furnace to overheat, or cause freezing on the condensing coils in your air conditioner unit. You should use a MERV-rated filter recommended for your system by the manufacturer.
